Requesting a Pet: Guidelines & Insurance
At Bee City Living, we know that pets are part of the family! In line with modern housing updates, tenants now have a legal right to request a pet, and landlords cannot unreasonably refuse permission.
To keep the process transparent and protect the property, here is how pet requests are managed:
1. How to Submit a Pet Request. If you would like to bring a pet into your home, you must submit a formal request to our team via email. Please include:
- The breed and size of the animal.
- Age and training history.
- Confirmation that the pet is fully vaccinated and microchipped (if applicable).
Once submitted, we have a legal window of 42 days to provide you with a decision. If the landlord wishes to refuse, they must provide a valid, objective reason (such as building head-lease restrictions that legally ban animals from the entire block).
2. Pet Insurance Requirements
While landlords cannot charge an extra "pet deposit" or increase your security deposit beyond the legal 5-week cap, they are legally permitted to make pet approval conditional on **Pet Insurance**.
Before your pet is approved to move in, you will need to provide proof that you have:
* Maintained a valid pet liability insurance policy OR * Agreed to cover the cost of the landlord’s specific insurance policy framework covering pet damage.
🐾 Responsible Pet Ownership: Tenants remain 100% financially liable for any damage, deep cleaning, or flea treatments required at the end of the tenancy caused by an animal.
